Zoë Watts

My work addresses cross-cultural identity, displacement, and acculturation through whimsical creatures and cryptids that transcend mythology. I reference Chinese art historical traditions, belief, and folklore in my works which are inspired by the landscape and wildlife of the Southwest United States. In these pieces, I place familiar creatures in fantastical settings, rooted in Chinese painting, calligraphy, and ceramic history, but reinvented to include my personal experiences and reflect my communities.
Zoë Watts is a metalworker and art educator from Yulin, Shaanxi. They grew up in Austin, TX and have exhibited sculpture, woodcuts, and photography in solo and group exhibitions across Massachusetts, Colorado, and Texas, including at the McNay Art Museum in San Antonio.
Zoë currently resides in Denver with their cat, Pandan, where they work as a fabricator and continue to play with dirt.
