My interdisciplinary practice explores themes of language, borders, technology and politics. These investigations expand from installations to time-based media. They aim to examine my position within complex global systems exploring how we perceive and interact with our environment and its inherent political dimensions. The relationships within my work are meant to be read in a non-linear way, through deep analysis, research and reflection.
This approach materializes in my ongoing artistic research. Tower of Babel, an exploration within this research, is a sound installation that examines the socio-technical-environmental dimensions of borders through the lens of the US-Mexico boundary.
In May 2024 I traveled to the San Ysidro Point of Entry—the western hemisphere’s busiest land border crossing—to record the soundscapes from both sides of the border. Utilizing binaural recordings that were captured at the same time from both sides of the border the installation transforms sound into a vehicle for understanding border dynamics.
Through a careful arrangement of speakers and light, the gallery becomes a “sound border” where visitors navigate shifting sonic layers. Sound functions not merely as an environmental byproduct but as a crucial material revealing invisible pressures and frictions. The installation invites listeners to experience the ‘in-between’ of human sensibilities and environmental qualities. By drawing parallels between two geographical locations, the work encourages a broader discourse that transcends national boundaries. It prompts reflection on how borders, both real and perceived, mediate our interaction with the world, shaping our collective futures through human intervention, environmental forces, and socio-political dynamics.
