MFA ’12 Architecture
I am inspired by the physical world around me and the way light and shadow tend to change our impression of that world. The image in this exhibit entitled One Vanderbilt, was taken in the observatory at the top of that building in New York. It’s sort of a street scene, except it is taking place on the 73rd floor. The other image, Harbor Fog, was taken on one of my regular walks around Boston. I try to find those parts of our environment that we may not always see, or notice. I would like to think that I can set out in the morning and find just what I am looking for, but I cannot; it just happens. I am interested in finding new ways of looking at our everyday world. I am drawn in equal measure to large and small subjects, portraits and landscapes, abstract and documentary.
Michael J. Ricciuti is a photographer, painter, and a registered architect who has helped steer the design of two of Boston’s most iconic towers, among other projects. Before entering architecture, he was a journalist for both print and online publications, and at one point considered a career in photojournalism. Now he sees photography as a way to better understand the world around him. He and his wife live in Boston and enjoy exploring the city on foot.
