MFA ’18 Fine Arts Low-Residency
My artistic practice directly interrogates the structural mechanics of political systems, institutional control, and human precarity. By repurposing raw industrial materials and discarded cultural artifacts, I construct site-specific installations and conceptual sculptures designed to challenge institutional power and provoke unevaded civic dialogue.
In Time?, I subvert an iconic yellow CD V-715 radiological survey meter—mass-produced by the U.S. Office of Civil Defense during the height of the 1960s Cold War. Originally engineered with an ion chamber to measure high-level post-nuclear radiation, this relic of fallout shelter infrastructure was designed for an apocalyptic tomorrow that never arrived. By inserting a modern quartz clock directly into the face of this obsolete instrument of state-sponsored anxiety, I fuse the measurement of chemical decay with the measurement of everyday time.
My work often stands in dialogue with the legacy of rigorous institutional critique and material subversion. By reframing this rigid object of historical dread into a quiet, tactile monument to human survival, Time? asks the viewer to consider how we quantify risk, manage public anxiety, and navigate the silent, lingering infrastructures of control that shape our modern landscape.

Keith M. Francis is an American contemporary artist, sculptor, and educator whose research-driven practice has been exhibited internationally.
