MFA ’08 Fine Arts Low-Residency
My current paintings are inspired by dogs, manatees, lemurs and other animals, as well as fashion and interior design, and the ways that people document and represent their pets and their surroundings on social media.
I’m working on a series that I call Florida Room: paintings that combine grand, ordered interiors with various wild and domesticated animals. A “Florida Room” is a space that is indoors and outdoors at the same time, the intersection of the things that we build and the living world that surrounds us. This series is represented in this show by the painting Tommy in Opulence.
Concurrently, I am also painting Iggys of Insta, a series of portraits of dogs that I find on instagram (iggy being the vernacular for Italian Greyhound). These are small portraits painted on board and intended to be displayed on walls or propped on shelves (cabinet pieces). For reference, I use screen-shots of videos that I scrutinize for just the right pose and attitude. Though there are many Instagram Iggys, only a very few interest me as painting subjects. One favorite is Iggy Tomas – or Tommy – who lives in Moscow. Tommy is pictured in all three pieces in this show. He appears in both my Iggys of Insta series as well as in many of the Florida Room paintings.

Kate Ledogar has owned a gallery, directed an art center, written art criticism for a Boston weekly and taught art in various mediums to students of all ages. Her work has been exhibited in Boston, Savannah, New York and Eastern Long Island, and her paintings are featured in private collections in the United States, Denmark, Spain, Australia and Mexico. She lives with her family in Western Massachusetts.
