I work with oil paint on a variety of surfaces that include paper, canvas, cardboard and wood. The studio is where I work, where I put ideas together. Shapes expressing forms is an idea that I investigate with my painting. In accordance with geometry, color and shape I consider the works to be of a pragmatic exploration. I use paint to define space and surface.
I’m interested in the inner depth of geometric painting. The uncertainty becomes measured and calculated. I use lots of gray and black when mixing paint. These tones are matte and absorb light where the surface of the work is evident.
The palette knife is a tool I use to apply paint that lends to a plastering effect. Helping to build the surface into a tactile field. My paintings feel somehow more than just art, a renewal of thinking and painting.
I like the investigation and symmetry in artists like Pier Mondrian, Paul Klee and Joan Miro as they find meaning in the process. They’ve used nature to dictate abstract painting for themselves. The act of painting, and where I find myself at the end is what matters. I explore these directions with art history and painting in mind, and I’m transcended for a moment.
Jeffrey Rezende was born on the island of St.Croix in the U.S. Virgin Islands. He attended the Interlochen Summer Arts Program in 1994. In 2002 he attended the study abroad program at the Burren College of Art in Co. Clare Ireland. He lives and works in Peabody, MA where he exhibits his abstract oil paintings.
