I love making things. I dabble, I bake, I sew, I cook, I paint, I play… Bringing something forward from my mind into the world feels like a form of real magic. I tend to take my time and enjoy the process of the work. I try not to take myself too seriously so that I can keep the joy and play of making a new thing. I work a lot with young children, and the way children wield creativity with such lightness and ebullience is a source of inspiration for me. Oil painting is wholly new to me. I recently learned the grisaille technique which begins as monochromatic painting and incorporates color by layering transparent glazes. The process feels a bit like sculpture, but new in a way that feels light and joyful.

Corinne Kamiya graduated from Mass Art in 2009 with an MFA in sculpture. She spent the next few years showing work in New York and Hawaii before taking a hiatus after her daughter Matoki was born. She has been working in early education for the last decade and recently began oil painting.
