The majority of my artistic output is based around sound but I occasionally produce silent holographic video dioramas like the one featured in this show. These pieces are inspired by pre-cinematic devices and early silent films but I also want them to reflect on the modern human condition. “Laptops” deals with the lack of actual physical intimacy in an age when it’s so easy to communicate with anyone all over the world. It features two naked people sitting on a bed with their computers on their laps while a red light flickers outside as if from a growing fire that they are oblivious to. When one of them finishes an email, they close their computer and attempt to make-out with the other one but that person gestures that they need to finish their own email before proceeding – which then prompts the other person to open their laptop again and start working on something else. This “hold-on-a-moment” back and forth goes on infinitely without the lovers ever getting to it – inspiring the “WARNING: unsatisfying sexual content” wall text.

Antony Flackett is a multimedia artist and musician from the Boston area who lives in Cambridge MA. He has an MFA in Studio for Interrelated Media from MassArt where he currently teaches video and electronic music and works as the Associate Director of Audio Visual Technologies. In addition to his video work, he also records and performs music under his own name as well as under the moniker “DJ Flack.” He likes to make art that is straightforward and accessible and much of it is viewable on his YouTube channel.
