Rooted in a specific event and my Jewish experience, these works depict groups of figures suspended between presence and absence. They carry the weight of inherited trauma, yet moments of light and quiet beauty emerge within the darkness. The figures trace how sorrow and resilience coexist, reflecting a human condition that spans generations and borders. I work in layers, glazing thin washes of paint onto canvas and then sanding, scraping, and wiping until light emerges from beneath. In my monoprints, dozens of layers of ink partly obscure what came before. Figures appear unexpectedly, revealed through the process itself, as if insisting on being seen. This movement between concealment and exposure mirrors how I navigate loss and memory.
Alison Judd is a Boston-based painter and printmaker whose work explores nature, memory, and the passage of time. She studied painting and art history at Brandeis University and received her Master of Fine Arts in painting and printmaking from Massachusetts College of Art. Recent exhibitions include Vitality at Abigail Ogilvy Gallery, The Memory of Leaves at the Huntington Theater Gallery, Be-tween at the Brandeis University Alumni Gallery, and Motherhood as Muse at Concord Art. Her work is held in private and corporate collections across the United States and abroad.
