I explore how visual experiences can cause an individual’s perception of space to oscillate between reality and imagination. I focus on how layered information can evoke mental images of dreamlike spaces. Using video footage, painting, and computer graphics, I build improvisational structures of uncanny landscapes, carefully considering the relationship between the realistic and the abstract, and the painterly and the cinematic. The process of layering allows me to weave different times and spaces together, and transform the familiar into a new perspective. The resulting juxtapositions expand the viewer’s sense of reality as they move through an abstract narrative arc. By depicting imperceptible environments, I hope to challenge our usual patterns of perception.
