The alchemist believed a creative work has a life all its own, independent of creator, straddling the worlds of matter and psyche, of both and neither.

A El Mismo explores, builds, and brings to life the notion of a stolen ancestral future. Inspired and driven by his families’ immigration to the United States from Colombia through Mexico, he proposes an alternative timeline where the Spanish Colonization of Latin America hadn’t occurred, offering instead a visual narrative to what Pre-Hispanic cultures from Colombia, like the Muisca, might have looked like had they had the chance to thrive into the 21st century.

Christian De Restrepo is a Boston-based American/Colombian maker whose body of work echoes those ideas of the alchemist. Using unusual and mundane materials, he explores intimate and human emotions through an obsessive, almost ritualistic process, learning to look at things not for what they are, but rather for what they could be.
