Terry Boutelle

MFA ’13 Fine Arts Low-Residency

My current painting practice includes conceptual approaches to the present geopolitical world, exploring the forces that are changing our planet and driving migration.

Working with acrylic and mixed media, I like to push the potential of the materials.  Layering paint with collage, relief, non-traditional materials and found objects, I build up the surface of the picture plane.  I might use plaster, fabric, paper, papier mache, polyethylene foam, found objects, and other materials to create a contoured and varied surface.  Although the paintings are content-driven, I also wrestle with the issues of form and color until I’m satisfied that there is a rhythm and beauty to the final work. My hope is that viewers will approach the work with curiosity, and in exploring the visual qualities, reflect on the more urgent content.
