Sixten Abbot

MFA ’16 DMI

I try to create provocative pieces that combine the old and the new, typically by repurposing existing objects; readymade v2.0 as it were. I use interactivity and/or online connectivity to make statements about modern values and identity. No one has ever accused my work of being subtle, which is particularly evident in this piece, The Consumer (I also like puns). I consider all of my work to be drafts, as they’re limited by my technical/materials ability (and availability) at the time and subject to upgrades as time and finances allow.

Naturally, it’s the modern components that cause problems, although not necessarily in the way you’d expect; my real-time connected pieces can be made obsolete by other companies’ decisions. One of my pieces was bricked because Craigslist banned adult “personals” listings. C’est la vie technologique. Où est l’art? L’art est à la poubelleLe — et le singe est sur la branche.

Sixten Abbot received a BFA from RISD 1992 and an MFA from MassAart (DMI) 2016. He worked for more than 25 years in the graphic design and advertising industry and began to teach undergraduates in 2010. He currently teaches part-time at Northeastern University and makes interactive pieces when the muse [sic] strikes him.
