SHAN ROSS

MFA ’25 Fine Arts Low-Residency

I primarily work in ceramics, crafting wheel-thrown vessels through traditional pottery techniques. My latest projects feature elements of marbling, raku, and kintsugi to blend layers, crack clay, and damage surfaces.

Nature is visually reflected in my art. Surf, sand, and moss are key elements in my creative aesthetic, and firmly ground the viewer’s experience in the natural world.

My work explores brokenness and the value we place on connection. Trade and gifting are an important part of my ethos as is my belief that sharing our stories adds richness to the world.

Shan Ross is a ceramic artist in Boston, Massachusetts. Before turning to clay, they studied nonprofit development and business administration, eventually choosing to pursue ceramics through mentorships with artists in Oklahoma, and Oregon. Their practice includes a focus on kintsugi repair techniques and atmospheric firing methods.

Shan currently teaches Pottery at Arlington Center for the Arts. After completing their MFA, they will be heading to Onishi, Japan, for a residency on community-based Anagama wood firing practices.
