Words are formless ideas but can turn into animated actors in our lives. Sometimes they are bold and immobile, sometimes capitalized and screaming, and other times, their meaning changes completely based on the punctuation and context. They persistently resurface at unexpected moments. We might become numb to them, learn to ignore them, or might even get defeated by them. In my work, I am interested in highlighting phrases that are used by institutions of power to establish authority over individuals. Systems of power such as families, social communities, and art institutions use language to establish control over information, text, speech, movement, and actions of those within their reach. With the use of accumulation, redaction, and transparency, I attempt to amplify or diminish the power of these words.
Written language has become important in my studio practice, either as the subject matter or in the conceptual process. I set parameters prior to the start of each project and try my best to follow them, but aesthetics have forced me to abandon these rules in the past. As I create work, I keep a mental score of this battle in my studio. It is an exercise in resisting the forces that vie control over me. The victories are quietly celebrated, and the losses are easily accepted.
