Sachiko Kawagoe

MFA ’25 Architecture

In the effort to seek an anti-colonial architectural practice, I collected my old and new personal journal entries related to a diasporic, or lost, sense of place. The overlays of translation and censorship each refer to the multi-generational bilingual education effort in which I was raised, and to my grandfather working as a censor, inking out the letters from the US for the Japanese military during WWII. As a result of this archive of memories, a contradictory place appears between the desires for consumption and conservation, acceptance and denial.
