Luisa Duarte

I am a Venezuelan American artist based in Houston. The construction of my imagined reality translated into spatial environments has been shaped by memory, displacement, and my Houston’s personal perception. I am interested in creating works that are perceived as sites of balance, spaces where tension and stability coexist, offering moments of pause, reflection, and recalibration.

My practice moves between two-dimensional and three-dimensional processes, transforming works on paper into three-dimensional compositions that engage architecture and the viewer’s perception. Geometric forms and color serve as a foundation for this exploration. The trapezoid reappears as a form that embodies both stability and delicate imbalance, living between balance and tension.

Color plays a defining role in my work. Applied in a direct and vibrant way, it often takes a protagonist place over form, activating space and shaping perception. It works both a structural and emotional force, guiding the viewer’s experience and emphasizing the dynamic relationship between form and environment.

My process is intuitive based but grounded in my architectural training. It is materially driven, grounded in layering, displacement, and transformation. Across different techniques and supports, I seek to construct works that often refer to architectural spaces that hold tension while offering a sense of presence, introspection, and renewal.

Luisa Duarte is a multidisciplinary artist whose practice is shaped by her background in architecture and expressed through various techniques, using geometric abstraction . Born in Venezuela and based in Houston, her work bridges structured design and intuitive expression, exploring memory, place, and belonging through a dialogue between nostalgia and discovery.

Her recent public installation, Urban Sentinels, at the ION Building translates her works on paper into four large-scale, three-dimensional sculptures that inhabit the built environment. The project reflects Duarte’s commitment to site-responsive art, using color, form, and spatial rhythm to create moments of contemplation and connection within public space.
