Leslie Lyman

Transforming my lived experience as a woman, a mother, and a wife is at the heart of my artistic practice. I am translating objects into meaning, effort into evidence, the domestic into the political, the home into the public sphere, and emotional labor of women into patriarchal consciousness. My work speaks about my experience. It also speaks about a shared female experience – women carrying the emotional labor of families and, therefore, society.

A student of history, Leslie Lyman has long been interested in the lives of women. She was an American Studies major at Smith College. Leslie is using mixed media with historical objects, historical techniques, and photography to blend the past and present in order to discuss the emotional labor of women. Her interests lie in the complex realities of today, as seen from the generational history we all hold.
