Jialin Wang

MFA ’23 Fine Arts 3D

As an international artist, my practice merges traditional Chinese aesthetics with contemporary Western influences, navigating a wide range of media and expressive forms to communicate nuanced thoughts and emotions. Art is how I express my feelings, whether it’s a memory, a political statement, or a cultural reflection. I investigate the profound human connections between culture, nature, place, and emotion—all anchored in the fluid and evolving concept of “home.”

My favorite medium is ceramics. I responsively incorporate scale, texture, color, and mixed media into my artworks. I play with inner pressure and the clay’s capacity to stretch before it breaks. I can’t help but feel that clay and I share some characteristics: we are resilient, flexible, and have great potential. I express my observations and innermost thoughts through repetitive motions in my artwork. Starting with ceramics, I gradually incorporated other forms of art into my work, striving to achieve a balance between different mediums.
