How does a painting communicate? What is the function of a painting?

My paintings are investigations of surface. I experiment with a variety of surfaces including newspaper, cardboard, wood, oil, and clear acrylic gesso. This idea of building a painting with a palette knife: scraping away viscous oil paint and going back to the aura of the painting where I find a place to begin again.

In accordance with geometry, color, shape and pattern, my current work revolves around systems in nature. What interests me is how the painting works, how the painting speaks to the viewer. I want the painting to be personal: a one-on-one conversation where the viewer and painting interact. This interface between the two implies a functional activity.

I’m transcended for a moment as the painting’s feel somehow more than just art, a renewal of thinking and painting.
