Jeffrey Rezende

MFA ’12 Fine Arts 2D

My oil paintings reference the natural world. I experiment with a variety of surfaces including newspaper, canvas, cardboard and wood. I utilize these materials to investigate abstract painting. In accordance with geometry, color, shape and pattern, my current work revolves around systems in nature. What interests me is how the painting “works”, and how the juxtaposition of shapes alludes to a sense of movement. I use a palette knife to apply and scrape away paint where layers of material become exposed. Strips of newspaper and paint are folded over the edge alluding to the painting’s foundation and history. I’m transcended for a moment as the painting’s feel somehow more than just art, a renewal of thinking and painting.

My name is Jeffrey Rezende, and I was born on the island of St. Croix in the U.S. Virgin Islands in 1981. I attended the Columbus College of Art and Design in Ohio and graduated in 2005 with a BFA in Painting. In 2012 I received an MFA in Painting from the Massachusetts College of Art and Design. I currently live and work in Peabody, MA where I exhibit my abstract paintings.
