I believe that true art helps disclose the nature of being to us. This explanation is helpful because it leaves the “what art is question” for everyone to decide for themselves. These two paintings represent a kind of milestone in my own practice. They are from a series of paintings that began in 2022. I’ve always been interested in the idea of translucence,  scrims, and the vague imagery that can be seen behind the bands of color. In other words, I’m  interested  in what is seen and what is not seen. As I work I try to find out the same thing Gauguin searched for “Where did we come from, what are we, where are we going”

My work has been influenced by the humanity of Giotto, the dark imagination of Goya, Manet’s technique and Cezanne’s Doubt. Also by Mark Rothko, Agnes Martin, John Zurier and many other color field painters.
