GAIL WINBURY

MFA ’25 Fine Arts Low-Residency

We are amalgams of our history, and my art embodies years of living. I view a task as an artist is to translate into visual language that which cannot, dare not, or is difficult to express in verbal language. My training as a psychologist merges seamlessly with my painting.

Previous series of my paintings have addressed gender, mortality and childhood memory. Currently, I am exploring uncertainty and the intersection of age, embodiment and gender in my art. Specifically, I am interested in how the demands of abstract painting are affected by my gender and age.

As an artist, my love of color, process and the materiality of oil paint is balanced by a recognition of emotional, humorous, and contemporary concerns. However, I am less interested currently in the meaning or conceptualization of the work and more in process and formal qualities. Working abstractedly in oil paint and collage, my materials guide an unpredictable unfolding with time embedded in and integral to my art.

Gail Winbury’s abstract art has been in national and international exhibitions. This includes recent solo exhibitions at the Elizabeth Wilson Museum and Kean University. She attended  artist residencies in the USA, and Europe, and this fall will be in residence in France. She previously received an artist grant for Israel.  Her publications include Rutgers University’s Rejoinder Journal.  Winbury resides in New Jersey and holds a doctorate in Psychology. Her work is in public and private collections.
