Carolina Otero

My work evokes nature and the urban, their emotional tones and rhythms in constant flux and interrelation. Grounded in a deep engagement with automatic drawing and a chance-driven abstract process of collage, I work across various media including printmaking, drawing, collage, plaster, ceramics,  video animation, photography and installation. I deconstruct, intervene, place next to one another, superpose and intertwine fragments of my own drawings, photographs, engravings, or prints with other images, objects and/or media.

Ad hoc encounters permeate my mark-making and lens-based works. For the last seven years I have explored the intersubjective nature of photography, creating visual dialogues between perceptual realities that surround me. Distilled images of nature engage with fragmented urban constructs, embodying resonance, identity, evocation, dissonance, isolation, or unexpected presence.

My practice is an exercise in attention, an ongoing effort to engage with the visible and invisible dimensions of experience and hold multiple realities in dialogue as I make sense of the world.
