I work in collaboration with my body to create open abstract imagery.
Referencing the contours and marks of my form, I repeatedly layer drawings of myself, building and destroying the image to something unrecognizable. The process of creating these works provides me with invaluable time to sit with how I see myself and the possibilities that can arise from that point of view. The depiction of my body is no longer singular, multiple moments and perspectives can be present.
Within abstraction, I have learned to embrace the unknown. That openness extends beyond image into my engagement with materials and color. My practice is both a reflection on my body and a celebration of process, an investigation shaped by experimentation. Working with charcoal, ink, and paint, I explore the potential of mark-making and color. Through playing with material and hue, I am developing my own visual language that inspires me. I hope that in viewing my work, the audience can share in the sense of discovery that I experience while creating it.
The figure and the abstract combine in my exploration of self and materiality, resulting in a breadth of open imagery that challenges and excites me.
Bridey McGlynn is a painter and printmaker based in Boston, MA. She earned her MFA in 2D Fine Art at Massachusetts College of Art and Design and received her BFA from Syracuse University. She currently works as an Administrative Assistant at MassArt. Bridey’s work has been exhibited in “Fish Don’t Sleep” at MassArtxSowa in Boston, MA, “New Talent” at Alpha Gallery in Boston, MA, and The Center for Contemporary Art’s “2026 International Juried Exhibition”, in Bedminster, NJ.
