I oscillate between thinking about portraiture as physical and psychological. Working in portraiture, I desire a moment to focus on the individual: who they are as a person, how they are vital to their environment, and their role in the inner workings of their community. By spending time with folks and documenting the communities I inhabit, I fall further into who I am as an artist and a person. Interacting with the sitters, and attempting to harness their powerful presence, the works resonate beyond the medium— they are documents, tributes, and commitments to creating connection, compassion and respect for my fellow persons’ day-to-day life through understanding. These ongoing portraits are crucial to my practice, grounding me in what it means to be human.
