MFA ’12 Fine Arts 3D

I use wood, clay, and/or fabric to create an object that I combine with found artifacts or reproduce multiples of to build an installation. These installations begin as visual poems inspired by personal experiences and then evolve into more open-ended constructions that celebrate the strange and the beautiful. Using and elaborating on quotidian objects, I invite viewers to have an intimate experience within a public space.  My work is inspired by Moorish architecture, trees, the ocean, the process of disintegration, poetry, dancing, and artist communities.

Lament, in pink, is a tower of bright pink purses that dwarfs the viewer. The feminine symbolism of the pink purse and the ephemerality of fashion and fabric are a deliberate contrast to the normally solid and imposing structure of a tower. The installation is a reminder that the possessions that surround us also arm us, evoke memories, and represent eras or individuals.

The work is also an homage to my friend Heather who bought a beautiful hot pink purse after her first big promotion.  It was irresistibly shiny and fun.  At parties, I used to sling it around my shoulder and say “Goodbye I’m leaving with my new purse,” and Heather would laugh.
